History made in 3rd place performance at McCarthy Invite

It was another great day to be a Trojan, as the boys took home another high finish, taking 3rd place at Hinsdale Centrals annual McCarthy Invite this past Friday.  North beat some of Illinois’ best perennial programs, such as Hinsdale Central, Hinsdale South, Lyons Township, Bloom, and Lincoln Way.  The completion was tough, but the Trojans were able to step up to the challenge.  There were some great individual and relay performances that highlighted the overall team effort from this weekend, including a record breaking 4x2 relay.

On the Track:  1:27.3!

·         The unexpected continues to be the expected from this year’s 4x2 group of Matt Pospicil, Ryan Koegel, Nate Sloan, and Jordan Munar.  They demolished the previous school record by over a second with a time of 1:27.3.  It is the second time they have ran a time that was the state best at the moment.  It is currently the 2nd best time in state and 50th best in the Nation.

·         The 1600m tandem of Ben Eaton and Zach Smith did well for the Trojans.  Ben Eaton showed another gear down the stretch, placing him 4th with a time of 4:30.3.  Smith came in just behind in 5th with a time of 4:32.3.

·         Kevin Profit continues a senior year for the ages, as he pushed the pace in the 3200, making all in the field earn their place.  Kevin held on for a 2nd place finish  in the 3200 with a time of 9:29.8.  He continues to inch closer and closer to the state qualifying mark.

·         The 4x1` relay team of Matt Pospicil, Ryan Koegel, Nate Sloan, and Jordan Munar finished 3rd in the 4x1, despite 2 ugly handoff’s.  It was a season best time for them, placing them among the states elite in the 4x1.

·         The 4x4 relay of Nate Sloan, Ryan Zemel, Tony Zea, and Ryan Koegel gutted out a 3rd place victory.   Ryan Koegel put on his usual superman cape before another great anchor leg, as he is no stranger to the dramatic.  Koegel passed two teams on the inside of the backstretch, a gusty move, and never looked back on his way to another come from behind finish.

·         The 4x8 team of Mike Casey, James Diamond, Ben Dalla Valle and Andrew Noll finished 4th with a time of 8:17.4.  This is another team inching closer to what they hope to be a downstate squad at the state meet in Charleston.

In the field:  Put on your hardhat’s, because the field guys are doing work!

·         Paul Maskevicius continues to score major points for the Trojans.  His 12-06 mark was good for 2nd place.

·         Jack Czyzewicz continues to contribute to the cause, taking home a 5th place finish with a mark of 11-06.

·         Alex Meier and Riley McGinnis continue to do their best Batman and Robin impersonation with high marks in the Jumps.  Alex Meier finished 2nd in Long Jump and 6th in Triple with marks of 21-08, and 41-02.  Riley McGinnis finished 5th in Long and 7th in Triple with marks of 20-06 and 41-02.

·         Nick Janicki finished 2nd in the disc, marking with a 148-00.  It has been an impressive rookie campaign for the freshman.

·         Marckus Simmons put in a strong mark in the disc as well, going 124-01, good for a 6th place finish.

Life does not get any easier for the boys, as this was a gear up for the upcoming West Suburban Silver Showdown next Friday, May 11th at Lyons Township.  There, the boys will match up against two the states toughest teams, Oak Park and York.  This was a good tune up for the men of Downers North, but they will again have to rise to the occasion, as they have done all year.  Good luck to the Trojans, as they move on the Post Season!
