Trojans Finish 3rd at Conference Meet

The men of Downers North finished 3rd at the West Suburban Conference Meet on Friday night, falling only 2 points short of the 2nd place Dukes of York.  They may have fallen just short of York, but they did not fall short in show of heart, as this team left everything they had on track or in the field, and they did not disappoint.

On the Track:  West Suburban Silver… Meet Tony Zea

·         The performance of the day came from smallest guy the track, when Tony Zea would not be denied in the open 800.  Tony Zea ran a PR time of 1:59, and finished 3rd place in the best conference in the state for the 800.  Most probably thought he could not keep the pace after he came through the first 400 in contention, but the only thought that mattered was that of Tony Zea, and his thought was that he wasn’t going to be passed.  Not only did he not let up, but he put on a kick that landed him 3rd in conference.  What a performance from a star in the making.

·         In the 3200, Zach Smith and Ben Eaton gave their usual efforts and scored for the Trojans.  Smith battled for 5th place throughout the final half mile, but end up taking control the final 200, beating out his competitor from York for a 5th place, 9:45 finish. Eaton was steady the whole way through, in 4th place for most of the race, and that is where he finished.  Ben took 4th place with a 4:40 finish,

·         Kevin Profit, in his last conference meet, did not disappoint.  Kevin finished 4 place, behind 3 all-state caliber competitors.  In most conferences, Kevin would be a conference champion with his 4:23 performance.  Kevin will look to finish off one of the great DGN distance careers at the Sectional meet this Thursday and then onto the State Meet, where he will surely be looking to make some noise.

·         Jordan Munar and Jazz Charrier did a great job in the 100.  Munar took home a conference title, while Jazz Charrier, only a sophomore, was able to make finals and missed scoring by only 3/100ths of a second.  It was a terrific effort from the sophomore.  I’m sure we will be hearing more from him in the future.

·         The 4x2 of Matt Pospisil, Kyle LaVallie, Nate Sloan, and Jazz Charrier finished 4th with a time of 1:30.58.  Veterns Pospisil, LaVallie, and Sloan gave the Sophmore Charrier a chance to anchor down a very good 4x2.  And anchor it he did, to a 4th place finish.  The yrose to the occasion and gave a great effort.

·         Jordan Munar ran a PR in the 400, and placed him among the tops in the state.  His 49.12 was good for a conference championship.

·         Matt Pospicil and Jazz Charrier teamed up in the open 200, scoring points and adding to the cause for the Trojans.  Pospicil is often mispronounced “Possible,” but perhaps that would be the more appropriate name for himself these days, as it seems like anything is possible for the Senior heading down the stretch of the 2012 season.  He finished 2nd overall with a time of 22.68.  Matt looks to find himself on the Podium at the state meet in 2 weeks.  This was a great start to his postseason run.

In the Field:  Discuss Duo steals show in field and for the Trojans.

·         Discuss was the event of the day for the Trojans.  Marckus Simmons and Nick Janicki muscled up in the disc, finishing a terrific 2nd and 3rd.  This was the Trojans biggest scoring event of the day.  The duo really showed up when it mattered.  Simmons got 2nd with a mark of 139-1, and Janicki took 3rd with a mark of 137-4.  It was

·         Alex Meier finished 4th in the long jump with a mark of 21-10.  Riley McGinnis just missed scoring, placing 7th with a mark of 20-8.

·         Meier and McGinnis also paired in the Triple Jump.  Meier went 41-8, placing him 5th.  McGinnis went 41-2, placing 7th.

·         Paul Paskevicius took 3rd place in the Vault with a mark of 12-6.  It was a great performance from one of the most solid overall performers this year for Trojans.  He showed why he was on of the team MVP’s with this performance.

The Trojans took 2nd place after a 6th place finish the year before.  It has been a truly great year, both for individuals and the team, and North will try to keep this momentum going as they move to the sectional meet this Thursday at Lockport.  Come on out and support your Trojans as they try to qualify for the state meet in Charleston!
