DGN varsity, open teams first at Leavey Invite

The Downers Grove North boys cross country team’s varsity and open lineups captured first place at St. Charles East’s Jeff Leavey Invitational Saturday at Leroy Oakes Forest Preserve. The varsity put four in the top six and its top seven among the top 11 for just 26 points and a 73-point margin over second-place Geneva (99 points). Marmion (105) was third.

Senior Alec Danner (15:35.1 for 3.0 miles) and juniors Ryan Birkmeier (15:45.8), Jacob Ridderhoff (15:45.8) and Nick Chudzik (15:48.4) were second through sixth behind Geneva senior Tyler Dau (15:32.8) and Marmion senior Charlie Zimmer (15:33.3).  Senior Andrew Marek was ninth (15:52.8) and sophomore Matt Moravec (16:02.2) and junior Sam McCool (16:02.5) were 10th and 11th. Junior Brendan Lockerby (25th, 16:35.8) and senior Zach Goliszewski (35th, 16:55.1) also were among the top 40.

Senior Drew Pyburn won the open race (16:38.4) and the Trojans put five in the top six for just 19 points.
Junior Tyler Mertes (16:55.6), senior Donny Knapp (17:23.0), junior Miles Christensen (17:28.3) and senior Robert Falconer (17:29.3) were third through sixth, followed by juniors Britt Reilly (14th, 18:05.1), Max Krause (23rd, 18:22.0) and Andrew Gallawas (26th, 18:30.6), Jack Ramsden (29th, 18:37.9) and seniors Devin Johnson (32nd, 18:40.7), Collin Leger (46th, 19:25.9) and Steven Calvanese (52nd, 19:32.5) among the top 60.
The Trojans finished 38 points ahead of second-place St. Charles East (57 points). Pyburn was 1.5 seconds ahead of Marmion senior Andrew Lifka (17:39.9).
For the frosh-soph, sophomore Jack Roberts (16:46.3) and freshman Brad Rosen (16:57.9) were fourth and sixth. Freshman Matt Shimenetto (24th, 17:36.5), sophomore Michael Conkright (26th, 17:37.0) and sophomore Trevor Murphy (49th, 18:06.1) also were top-50 finishers, followed by freshman Tom Diamond (62nd, 18:31.4) and Clark Kelly (65th, 18:38.4) and Eric Bican (73rd, 18:43.9).

The Trojans (109 points) finished behind Wheaton North (73), Batavia (74) and St. Charles East (99). Roberts was one second from third place.
