3 Trojans Qualify for the State Meet!
IHSA Sectional – Meet Wrap-up
The boys track team had a very solid meet on Friday night at their home facility. The boys placed 5th out of 17 teams at the sectional with 54 points. The top teams finished as follows: 1st – Sandburg with 97, 2nd – Lockport with 71, 3rd – DGS with 59, 4th – Hinsdale Central with 55, 5th – DGN with 55, 6th – Shepard with 49, and 7th – Bolingbrook with 48.
The first qualifier came in the field events, as Nick Janicki hit the state qualifying mark on his first throw in the discus! Marckus Simmons finished 4th in the discus with a throw of 133-05, not his best, but conditions were tough during the field events because of a steady drizzle. The rain affected the pole vault and the high jump the most (it only took 6-1 to qualify in the high jump because of the slick conditions). Field event scoring performances were Steve Kanis – 6th High Jump with 5-11 and Jack Czyzewicz – 6th in Pole Vault with 12-3.
The rain dissipated shortly before the finals in the running events got underway and it turned out to be a nice night. The 4x100m Relay team of Kyle Leto, Steve Kanis, Charles Creamer, and Anthony Giordano ran a season best of 44.02 which was good enough for 3rd! Then Ben Eaton stepped on the track to lead from start to finish in the 3200m run and qualify for the state meet with a time of 9:23.17!
It was great to see that both Charles Creamer and Kyle Leto made finals in the 100m dash, Charles finished 5th and Kyle was 8th. The next race on the track was the 800m Run, which featured John Diamond in the 2nd heat of 3 and Tony Zea in the 3rd heat of 3. Jack started it off with a seasonal open 800m PR of 2:03.28 and winning his heat, not bad for a sophomore! Then Tony Zea ran admirably in a very talented fast heat where he finished 4th in 1:57.89, just 0.6 seconds from qualifying for the state meet.
The 4x200m Relay of Kyle Leto, Charles Creamer, Steve Kanis, and Richard Olekanma did a great job and ended up with a seasonal PR by almost 2 seconds to finish in 3rd with a 1:32.58! This was a huge improvement from earlier in the year!
Our last state qualifier came in the 1600m Run. Both Zack Smith and Ryan Clevenger ran solidly to finish 2nd and 5th respectively. Smith and Clevenger both closest very well the last 800m after a rather pedestrian 2:13 first 800m. Smith qualified for the state meet by finishing 2nd and running 4:18.89, under the 4:22.74 qualifying mark! Ryan Clevenger finished with a NEW sophomore school record of 4:24.12!
Very solid night for our Trojans and now on to the State Meet next week!
